"If you don't drink water, it looks like your brain is aging faster," says neuroscientist Lisa Mosconi. In an article published by the Los Angeles Times Mosconi covers everything from the importance of drinking tap water to how much of the US population is dangerously dehydrated.
Let's take a closer look at some of the keypoints of this article.
Dr. Mosconi on the Brain and Dehydration
"In the brain, which is 80% water, even very mild dehydration — a 3% to 4% decrease in water — can cause neurological issues." She then goes on to mention that dehydration can lead to mood swings, fatigue, and brain fog.
According to Dr. Mosconi, water with mineral content is much better for you than distilled water. Here's why:
"Tap water generally contains minerals the brain needs to keep itself hydrated." Dr. Mosconi reccomends using a water filter that removes contaminates like benzene and lead, but keeps preserves the mineral content of the water. "Purified and distilled waters are just fluids," she says. "There is nothing hydrating there."
On Americans and their consumption of water.
Dr. Mosconi found that about 40% of Americans consume less than four glasses of water a day. And about 7% of the whole population do not drink water at all!
Dr. Mosconi on dehydration and Alzheimer's disease.
Dr. Mosconi mentions that although there have not been any formal studies linking dehydration of the brain to Alzheimer's, she says "But some look at the brains of people who are not drinking, and they show many parts of the brain get thinner and lose volume over time in people who are dehydrated."
